Trump's America increasingly alone
L’Amérique de Trump, de plus en plus seule
If, for once, we are willing to take our eyes off the antics taking place in the Oval Office, we discover that it is not Europe that is alone, but America! With Russia, yes, its new ally, and locked in a head-to-head with China. Good luck with that!
In the space of a few days, Donald Trump's America, denying what it is at its very core, finds itself relegated to the camp of dictators and liberticides.
Above all, however, the excesses of its president are isolating it more and more. The list of public rejections is long, like so many snubs, of Donald Trump's statements.
Canada and Mexico reacted very aggressively, forcing him to suspend his decisions to increase customs duties. The President of Panama publicly accused him of lying and the President of Brazil reminded him that he had “not been elected emperor of the world”. The Prime Minister of Greenland, Mute Egede, does not want to be either American or Danish and has reminded him that he is not for sale or even 'up for grabs'. South Africa was offended by his attacks on the land redistribution plan. The Arab countries rejected his delusional plan for Gaza and, as an insult, proposed a more serious one.
The United Kingdom no longer claims its “special relationship” and is openly distancing itself from it. Germany has spectacularly cut its umbilical cord with its protector. And Europe, more united than ever, now imagines its security without NATO or NATO without the Americans. What can we say about the betrayed and humiliated Ukrainians!
Even in the United States, a majority of citizens are now hostile to him and the Supreme Court is beginning to sanction the illegal nature of his decisions.
Even on a skiing holiday, the ineffable Vice-President he has appointed found himself taken to task in a cable car by an outraged compatriot who suggested he go skiing in Russia!
Trump's America is increasingly alone. And while the empire obviously still has many resources, they will not be enough to convince anyone that it can be trusted to be an ally. The world seems unable shake off the nightmare of the world's foremost military power now in the hands of a gang of firebrands and oligarchs whose only concern is their personal fortune. The consequences will be long-lasting. This could well be Europe's moment.
